Greenhill Quiz Bowl Teams Nab First in Varsity, Junior Varsity Divisions

Eight Greenhill MS Quiz Bowl teams competed at the Cistercian Middle School Invitational on October 1. In the varsity division, Greenhill A placed first, Greenhill B placed third, Greenhill C placed fourth, Greenhill D placed fifth, and Greenhill F placed eighth.

In the junior varsity division, Greenhill E placed first, Greenhill H placed third, and Greenhill G placed sixth. Overall, it was a great day for Greenhill Quiz Bowl!

Varsity Division

Greenhill A (Akash Bose ‘27, Tomal Khan ‘28, Arman Makhani ‘28, and Smriti Siva ’27) won the varsity division — the first in-person tournament win since March 2020! Both Greenhill A and the eventual runner-up, St. Mark’s School of Texas A, entered the final round with an undefeated record. St. Mark’s rushed to a commanding lead early in the match, but Greenhill A rallied in the second half to secure an impressive 430-195 victory.

Greenhill B (Naomi Huang ’27, Henry Lipnik ’27, Vikram Sampath ’27, and Connor Kim ’28), Greenhill C (Dylan Shah ’28, Ansh Gandhi ’28, Adam Haq ’28, and Evan Tsai ’28), and Greenhill D (Tim Csallner ’28, Reian Ghelani ’28, Wilson Heeringa ’28, and Lucas Zhu ’28) rounded out the top five of the varsity division with third, fourth, and fifth place finishes, respectively.

Greenhill F (Rishi Kumbhani ’28, Ayaan Patel ’28, Gabe Torres ’28, and Renee Tse ’28) secured impressive wins over St. Rita A, Cistercian B, and St. Mark’s C.

Junior Varsity Division

Greenhill E (Blake Cark ’29, Benedetta Gennarelli ’29, Colin Houpt ’29, Evan Huang ’29, and Adam Tawil ’29) won the junior varsity division, winning seven consecutive games to finish with an undefeated record of 7-0. They landed a big win against St. Mark’s in both regulation and the final round (285 to 115). They finished most matches with a margin of victory of several hundred points.

Greenhill H (Sammar Agha ‘30, Casey Chon ‘30, Drake Clark ’29, Cameron Dawson ‘30, and Vivianne Wang ’30) battled their way to a third-place finish. They placed ahead of other teams with identical records at the end of regulation due to having the highest PPB (points per bonus). PPB is the best metric for determining how well a team is performing, and this team performed well in their first-ever in-person tournament.

Greenhill G (Lekha Chavala ’29, Alex Chon ’30, Nia Mehta ’29, Arianna Parikh ’29, Layla Taim ’30, Maahi Varma ’29, and Ansh Verma ’29) showed a solid performance and contested close matches against some tough teams.
