Greenhill Debate Team Brings Home Championship, Students Selected for USA Debate, Development Teams

The Greenhill Debate team started the year off on the right note by winning its first championship of the season at the Plano Senior-Clark Swing on August 26-27.

In World Schools Debate, the team of Janaki Bose ’25, Pooja Sangvi ’24, Natalie Stachowiak ’24, and Jeanette Yang ’24 were the undefeated champions of the World Schools division of the tournament. The teams of Abeera Amer ’24, Kaden Alibhai ’24, Vivaan Gupta ’24, Sherry Zhang ’25, and Dibyadeep Saha ’24, along with the team of Angela Kamgang ’24, Saida Bidiwala ’25, Varun Mukund ’25, and Nora Ahearn ’26 reached the semifinals, giving Greenhill School three of the four semifinalists competing in the tournament. Greenhill also had six of the top ten individual speakers in World Schools Debate.
 
In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sarah Koshy ’26 reached the semifinals of the tournament. Adam Kesselman ’24 reached the quarterfinals, and Christopher Row ’23 reached the octofinals.
 
In Program Oral Interpretation, students had two tournaments in one weekend! Karrington Barnett ’23 placed third in the Clark High School portion of the swing and fifth in the Plano Senior High School portion of the swing.
 
This weekend, a larger portion of the team begins their competitive season at Grapevine High School where 1,200 students from across the country will be competing, in person, in a variety of events.

STUDENTS SELECTED FOR USA DEBATE, DEVELOPMENT TEAMS

Two Greenhill students have been selected to join the USA Debate Team and Development Team for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
 
Sophia Li ’24 has been selected to the USA Debate Team for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
 
The USA Debate Team is supported by the National Speech and Debate Association and is comprised of twelve high school students from across the country who vied for membership through an application process that included multiple videos, essays, and personal interviews to go along with documentation of an outstanding record of Debate performances. The team competes domestically as well as in international competitions held in Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, and Singapore. While COVID-19 has made many competitions virtual, the USA Debate team competes several times yearly against the best and brightest students from around the world.

The USA Debate Team is coached by Aaron and Cindi Timmons.

For the second year in a row Natalie Stachowiak ’24 has been selected as a member of the Development Team of the USA Debate Team for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.

The USA Development Team is supported by the National Speech and Debate Association and is comprised of sixteen high school students from across the country who vied for membership through an application process that included multiple videos, essays, and personal interviews to go along with documentation of an outstanding record of Debate performances. The team serves as a training opportunity to prepare students in vying for the USA Debate Team, in addition to providing valuable training and competitive opportunities both domestically and internationally.
