Greenhill Debate Coach and Student Recognized by NSDA Lone Star District
The Lone Star National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) District announced that this year’s Coach of the Year and Student of the Year are both from Greenhill School. Director of Debate Aaron Timmons Jr. has been named Coach of the Year and Cameron Kettles ’22 has been named Student of the Year.
Aaron Timmons was awarded Coach of the Year for the Lone Star District of NSDA distinction because of his commitment to NSDA’s core values: leadership, service, equity, respect, and integrity. In his 29 years of service at Greenhill School, Timmons has coached eight NDSA national champions in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, World Schools Debate, and Poetry. He has also coached students who have won top speaker awards in Policy Debate (1996, 2017) and Individual High Point Student (1993). In addition to his coaching success in NSDA, Timmons has coached eight champions at the Tournament of champions and 34 state champions at the Texas Forensic Association State tournament. His work as an educator, coach, and community leader has earned him high honors - including hall of fame memberships (NSDA, TOC, TFA), Gold Key Society inductee for the Barkley Forum for High Schools, the NSDA Thomas Glen Pelham Award for NSDA in 2015, and recognition by the National Speech and Debate Association as one of the top coaches of the 20th century.
Cameron Kettles was nominated for the NSDA Lone Star District Student of the Year because she represents the tenets of the Association’s Code of Honor: humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service. Kettles is a two-year member of the USA Debate team and was chosen as a member of the final five to represent the country in the World Championships last summer. She is the top point earner in World Schools Debate in the country and was the NSDA World Schools National Champion in 2020, the NDCA World Schools Champion in 2021, and the Top Speaker at the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament in 2021.
Both Timmons and Kettles have been nominated for NSDA national recognition in their respective categories. Results for national recognition will be released this summer.
