Congratulations to the Greenhill Middle School "A" Quiz Bowl Team that captured the 2021 Texas State Quiz Bowl Championships title this past weekend.
Greenhill's "A" Team - which consists of seventh-graders Maya Jagsi, Aaron Kuang, Kate Ponnambalam, and Evans Senvalds - cruised through their first two opponents in T.H. Rogers Middle School and Wisconsin Hills Middle School before dropping their first TQBA match of the season to Beckendorff Junior High School. However, Greenhill would get its revenge as they defeated Beckendorff by a 570 to 120 score in the championship match. All four Greenhill students finished in the top-20 in performance at the tournament: Ponnambalam (3rd), Senvalds (4th), Kuang (18th), and Jagsi (19th).
Greenhill's "B" Team - which consists of eighth-graders Neha Bachu, Varun Mukund, Kaavya Sampath, and Harris Xie - finished fifth overall in the Open Division. The squad posted an impressive 4-2 record in regulation then entered the playoff rounds as the 6th seed. In the quarterfinals, Greenhill fell to Beckendorff's "C" Team in a close match. The team rebounded in the consolation match where they defeated St. John's School "B" Team by a 285 to 105. In the Open Division, Mukund finished fourth in individual performances while Bachu (18th), Harris (48th), and Sampath (71st) all recorded tremendous showings.
Greenhill's "C" Team posted an impressive performance at the state championships as the team entered the playoff rounds as the 12th seed and scored an upset by defeating the fifth-seed T.H. Rogers Middle School "B". After defeating The Anderson School (Manhattan, NY) in the quarterfinals, Greenhill dropped a hard-fought match to Beckendorff, 260-215, in the semifinals. Greenhill's "C" team consists of Ali Agha, Andrew Cai, Sydney Chien, Fernando Gupta, and Ishani Srivastava.
These three teams will compete at the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament on May 1-2.
In additional action, Greenhill's "D" Team finished third overall in the Seventh Grade Division while Greenhill's "F" Team and "G" Team notched a third-place and fifth-place showing, respectively, in the Elementary Division.
