Greenhill Mourns the Passing of Sally Estes, First Female Board Chair

The Greenhill community mourns the passing of Sally Estes who died on Tuesday, September 10.

Estes, the first woman to serve as chair of Greenhill's Board of Trustees, made a tremendous impact on the Greenhill community during her tenure on the Board. Estes served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years and served as its chair from 1983-86. As the chair of the board's scholarship committee, Estes pushed for making financial aid spending a targeted percentage of the School's annual operating budget in order to facilitate the achievement of the mission for serving the most diverse range of capable students possible.

During her first year as Board Chair, Estes negotiated a creative grant with the Hoblitzelle Foundation and soon presided over the construction of the Hoblitzelle Addition to the Coit Preschool in 1984, allowing the expansion of the motor room and art programs for prekindergarten and kindergarten students. In addition, Estes led the charge for a new Lower School building, which welcomed students in 1986 and stood for two decades.

Her crowning achievement, however, would be raising the Excellence in Education flag presented to Greenhill in 1985 by the United States Department of Education as the first independent school in Texas to receive the designation.

Estes later shepherded the historic land lease with the Trammell Crow Company to build Greenhill Park, a venture which effectively leased Crow the 14 acres east of the creek for 99 years. While the land was later sold, the funds helped seed Greenhill's endowment and took it to a higher level.

Estes daughter, Kris, and son, Risser, graduated from Greenhill in 1980 and 1983, respectively.

We extend our condolences as a community to the entire Estes family.
