Debate Team Captures Grapevine Classic Team Title

The Greenhill Debate Team outlasted a field of 100 schools from 12 states to capture first-place honors at the 30th Annual Grapevine Classic this past weekend.Below are some highlights from the 30th Annual Grapevine Classic:

• Anna Myers '19 and Mihir Rai '19 closed out the Lincoln Douglas Debate finals.

• Brian Zhou '19 earned 4th Place Speaker honors in the Lincoln Douglas Debate in addition to earning a spot in the Octo-Final Round.

• Christine Wu '19, Nicole Stachowiak '20, Joshua Timmons '21, and Ashley Shan '22 earned third-place honors in the World Schools Debate category

• Caroline Greenstone '22, Jothi Gupta '22, Cameron Kettles '22, and Aimee Stachowiak '22 finished third overall in the World Schools Debate event

• Greenhill had five of the top-10 Speakers in the World Schools Debate event: Christine Wu '19 (1st), Aimee Stachowiak '22 (3rd), Cameron Kettles '22 (6th), Caroline Greenstone '22 (7th), and Ashley Shan '22 (9th)

• Christine Wu was selected as the Top Speaker, and Aimee Stachowiak earned third-place Speaker in the World Schools Debate category

• Sam Charnes '19 and Alex Witheiler '20 reached the Octo-Final Round in Policy Debate

• Greenhill had five of the top-10 Speakers in Policy Debate: Joshua Kwon '19 (4th), Timothy Wegener '19 (6th), Alex Witheiler '20 (7th), Sam Charnes '19 (9th), and Joshua Leffler '20 (10th)

• Joshua Timmons '21 finished third overall in Program of Oral Interpretation and 5th in Poetry Interpretation

• Director of Debate Aaron Timmons, Jr. was recognized by the Grapevine Debate Team with their first Legends Award for his outstanding record of success and support of the event.

Zhou Selected to USA Debate Team for 2018-19 Season

Senior Brian Zhou was selected to the USA Debate Team for the second consecutive season. A two-time national champion, Zhou captured the National Tournament of Champions title in 2018 along with the Woodward Junior Varsity Championship the previous season.The USA Debate Team is supported by the National Speech & Debate Association and is comprised of 12 high school students from across the country who vied for membership through an application process that included multiple videos, essays, and personal interviews to go along with documentation of an outstanding record of Debate performances. This past season, the USA Debate Team finished sixth overall at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. The team competes all over the country to go along with international competitions held in Germany, Croatia, and Singapore. The USA Debate Team is coached by Aaron and Cindi Timmons.
