MS Students Sweep 2018 Letters About Literature Competition

Greenhill Middle School students took the top-three spots in the Level 1 category (Grades 4-6) in the 2018 Letters About Literature competition, sponsored in part by the Texas Center for the Book.

Adam Kesselman '24 received first-place honors on a letter that he wrote to Tim Howard based upon his book, The Keeper. Kesselman will have his letter submitted for competition at the national level, and will have the opportunity to read his letter and be honored at the Texas Association of School Librarians Meeting at their annual conference in Dallas.

Serena Martin '24 won second-place honors on a letter she wrote to John Green based upon his book, The Fault in Our Stars. Hannah Gaswirth '24 finished third overall with a letter about Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.

There were over 1,640 Texas students that participated in the competition and shared their personal connections to literature. This national reading and writing program, which was initiated by the Library of Congress, encourages 4th - 12th graders to write to an author (living or deceased) about how his or her book has affected their lives. Nationally, almost 40,000 students wrote letters this year, and since 1997, over a million students have participated in the competition.
