Greenhill Campus Buzzes as Students Return for 2017-18 School Year

Greenhill School’s campus filled with smiling faces this morning as approximately 1307 students in Preschool, Lower, Middle and Upper School started the 2017-2018 school year. Students and teachers, new and returning, greeted each other with hugs and high-fives, and posed for pictures in front of school signs and banners.

Preschoolers and Lower Schools met teachers and teaching fellows on the Lower School steps, released some first day energy on the playground, and excitedly found new cubbies and seats in their classrooms.

Middle and Upper School students gathered in Rose Hall in the Marshall Family Performing Arts Center for their respective opening assemblies. Head of School Scott Griggs, who is starting his last year as Head of School, opened by talking about the school’s annual theme of Character. He quoted John Wooden, saying: “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” He also noted that it is impossible to have character without living a life that includes Greenhill’s core values of honor, respect, and compassion.

Division heads further encouraged students to consider character in their daily actions and relationships. Head of Middle School Susan Palmer urged students to “be open, friendly, and ready to learn,” when their teachers and coaches reach out to them. Interim Head of Upper School Trevor Worcester, encouraged students to exhibit character with both their heads through academic, arts and athletic achievements, and their hearts by exhibiting honor, respect, and compassion in their day-to-day interactions.

Senior Anusha Kurapati, Student Council President, closed the Upper School assembly by encouraging everyone to take advantage of myriad opportunities available, to build friendships, and to take care of themselves throughout the year.

Here’s to a wonderful 2017-2018!
