Joan Romanosky, Latin teacher at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, has received a 2026 Merens Award from the American Classical League to recognize sustained and distinguished service to the Classics profession generally and to the ACL in particular. As her nominator shared, “Joan is an absolute powerhouse. Throughout her storied career, she has spread [love for the Junior Classical League] by starting a chapter at Greenhill School and by chairing several contests at both the state and national levels, including running the arts contests at Area C and Texas State for years, and the essay contest at Nationals. She also serves on the ACL DEI committee, the ETC Awards committee, and the ETC Nominations committee.” Joan has even inspired some of her students to become Latin teachers. Joan creates fun activities for her Middle School students, organizes parties, and ensures that her students have fond memories of their Middle School Latin experience and a desire to continue studying Latin in Upper School. Joan led student trips to Italy nine times and to Spain twice. Despite being a National Board Certified Teacher in Latin since 2004, Joan continues to learn through workshops, travel experiences, and courses. She models lifelong learning and maintains high standards for herself and her students. The American Classical League, founded in 1919, fosters and advances community, collaboration, and advocacy across all contexts of teaching and learning about the ancient Mediterranean world. Joan not only motivates and engages her Latin students, but also empowers them to think critically and value kindness. Congratulations to Joan Romanosky for this fitting recognition from the ACL! |
