Belonging at Greenhill: Building Community Across Every Division
Community takes many forms at Greenhill, but the goal remains the same: ensuring every student experiences a sense of belonging while building meaningful relationships that support growth and learning.
At Greenhill, community is woven into the daily lives of students from their earliest days in prekindergarten through their journey into the Upper School. Whether it's a morning meeting, an advisory group, a grade-level tradition, or a shared service project, students have consistent opportunities to know and be known, celebrate one another, and build meaningful connections.
While what community looks like changes as students grow, the goal remains the same: helping every student feel seen, valued, and connected. Across all divisions, Greenhill intentionally creates spaces where students can develop relationships, practice empathy, discover their strengths, and find a sense of belonging that supports both personal growth and academic success.

Preschool: The Foundation of Belonging
In prekindergarten, community building begins each morning. During Morning Meeting, students gather to review the day's schedule, greet one another, practice important classroom routines, and take on responsibilities such as serving as the daily helper. These predictable routines help young children develop confidence and independence while creating a shared experience that brings the class together each day.

Morning Meeting also gives students a chance to learn from one another. Children greet classmates in different languages, share stories from their lives, and practice listening as others speak. Through these daily interactions, students strengthen communication skills while learning that their voices, perspectives, and ideas are valued in the classroom.
Throughout the year, teachers intentionally create spaces where every child feels seen, heard, and safe. Students' cultures, languages, family backgrounds, and experiences are reflected in classroom conversations, books, and activities. By helping each child recognize both what makes them unique and what they share with others, prekindergarten lays the foundation for the strong sense of belonging that follows students throughout their Greenhill journey.
"When children feel seen, heard, and safe, that's when learning truly happens."
Lower School: Growing Together
In Lower School, community is strengthened through daily homeroom gatherings that bring students together before the academic day begins. Homeroom gives students time to connect, reflect, celebrate milestones, and prepare for the day ahead. Students honor birthdays through the meaningful "Gift of Words" tradition, recognize cultural and religious celebrations, and share special talents and interests with classmates, helping everyone feel known and valued.
These gatherings also provide opportunities for students to develop important organizational and executive functioning skills. Whether recording homework, planning for long-term assignments, organizing materials, or setting goals, students learn habits that support both academic success and personal responsibility. At the same time, they build confidence as they learn to work alongside and support one another.
Perhaps most importantly, homeroom helps establish the culture of inclusion that defines the Lower School experience. Through conversations, shared activities, and moments of laughter, students practice empathy, kindness, active listening, and respect. They learn to appreciate others' perspectives and experiences while discovering that every member of the classroom has something meaningful to contribute.
"Homeroom helps establish the culture of inclusion that defines the Lower School experience."
Middle School: Building Connection Through Shared Experiences
In Middle School, community expands beyond the classroom through programs, traditions, and shared moments designed to help students connect with one another and develop a strong sense of belonging. Fifth-grade students strengthen friendships and form new relationships during their trip to Vitruvian Park, while sixth graders begin the year with the longtime Hat Day tradition, using creative projects to share their interests, identities, and experiences while learning more about their classmates.
In eighth grade, students travel to Washington, D.C., as an entire class, strengthening relationships while learning together beyond campus. These shared moments become lasting memories and help create a strong sense of grade-level identity as students move through Middle School.
Community continues to grow through service opportunities, assemblies centered on Greenhill's Core Values, Student Life programming, and advisory. Together, these opportunities help students build leadership, communication, self-awareness, and decision-making skills while ensuring every student has opportunities to contribute, connect, and feel supported within the larger school.
"These shared moments become lasting memories and help create a strong sense of grade-level identity."
Upper School: Navigating the Journey Together
In Upper School, advisory provides a consistent source of connection and support during a time of tremendous growth. Each student is assigned to a small advisory group led by a trusted faculty mentor, creating a supportive environment where they can seek advice, celebrate accomplishments, navigate challenges, and create meaningful relationships.
What makes the Upper School advisory experience especially impactful is its longevity. Advisors remain with students throughout their entire Upper School journey, allowing students and advisors to build deep relationships over four years. During that time, advisors come to know students as individuals, helping them navigate academic challenges, explore interests, discover opportunities, and find their place within the broader Greenhill community.
Just as importantly, the advisory group becomes a community of its own. The small-group setting encourages authentic conversations and provides students with a reliable place to ask questions, seek guidance, and reflect on their growth. Together, students celebrate successes, learn from one another, and support one another through the challenges and milestones of Upper School. Along the way, they develop essential life skills such as time management, self-advocacy, communication, emotional intelligence, and responsible decision-making. The result is a support network that helps students not only succeed, but become confident, authentic young adults ready for the world ahead.
"The advisory group becomes a community of its own."
A Sense of Belonging That Lasts
From a Pre-K Morning Meeting to an Upper School advisory conversation, Greenhill creates intentional opportunities for students to connect, contribute, and belong. Each division approaches community in age-appropriate ways, but the purpose remains the same: ensuring every student feels known and supported.
These daily moments, traditions, celebrations, and relationships shape more than a school experience. They help students develop the confidence, empathy, and sense of purpose they will carry long after they leave Greenhill.
