Middle School Quiz Bowl Teams Compete at Invitational

On January 10, 42 Greenhill students competed in the St. Mark’s Middle School Quiz Bowl Invitational. Highlights are below.

MS Championship Bracket

Greenhill A – comprised of Cam Dawson ’30, Ella Bogdanow ’31, Carson Yoo ’30, and Yusuf Ashraf ’31 – advanced to the semi-final round. They finished with an 8-1 record, earning them a third-place finish. The team defeated Cistercian A in the preliminary rounds and defeated St. Mark Catholic School A and Cistercian B in the playoffs.

Cam Dawson ’30 was the second-best individual performer for the day, and Ella Bogdanow ’31 finished at #25 in a field of over 120 students.

Greenhill B – comprised of Aarna Gandhi ’31, Aarush Manikandan ’30, Aiden Provenzano ’32, and Simon Weinstein ’31 – earned a spot in the Championship Bracket. They started the tournament with a big win over Cistercian E and beat St. Mark’s G and St. Mark Catholic School C.

Greenhill C – comprised of Louie Bader ’30, Everett Davies ’31, Spencer Hanu ’31, Gregory Kramer ’31, and Arjun Shah ’31 – earned the #10 seed in the Championship Bracket. They started the tournament with three straight victories over St. Mark’s G, St. Mark’s E, and Cistercian D. They also defeated the A team from St. Rita.

MS Silver Bracket

Greenhill D – comprised of Zachary Bond ’31, Anay Patel ’31, Roman Rousseau ’31, and Brett Slavinsky ’31 – reached the final round of the Silver Bracket. On the way to the final, they defeated St. Mark Catholic School C, Cistercian D, and St. Rita B.

At 47 points for 20 toss-ups heard, Brett Slavinsky ’31 finished as the 13th overall best individual performance.

Greenhill E – comprised of Inaya Abubeker ’31 (first tournament), Eleanor Briant ’31, Fiona Ou ’31, Anandita Tandon ’31, and Stella Vigushin ’31 – played well against some of the toughest teams in the tournament, and their best win was against St. Mark Catholic School C.

Greenhill F – comprised of JD Karns ’30, Vihaan Kumbhani ’31, Jacob Kucher ’31, Caleb Vagefi ’31, and Connor Wilson ’30 – advanced to the quarter-final round of the Silver Bracket. The team defeated St. Mark Catholic School B and St. Mark’s G before defeating St. Mark D in the first round of the playoffs.

Elementary Division

Greenhill G – comprised of Dhruv Chaturverdi ’32, Eliot Houpt ’32, Malek Tawil ’32, and Henry Will ’32 – advanced to the semi-final round of the elementary division bracket and finished tied for third. They finished with a 5-3 record, including four straight wins to start the day and a playoff victory over St. Mark’s J.

Dhruv Chaturverdi ’32 finished in the top ten for individual performances in the elementary division.

Greenhill H – comprised of Michael Chen ’32, Chayse Nakamura ’32, Ethan Wang ’32, and Jayden Zhu ’32 – had great wins over St. Mark Catholic School E and St. Rita F.

Greenhill I – comprised of only three students, Faraaz Basit ’32, Sebastian Maldonado-Csige ’32, and newcomer Julian Nocerini ’32 – finished tied for 5th and won matches against rivals St. Rita E in the preliminaries and best friends Greenhill J in the playoffs.

Faraaz Basit ’32 finished the tournament with 7th best individual performance in the elementary division.

Greenhill J – comprised of Claire Cai ’32, Ananyaa Manikandan ’32, MJ Verma ’32, Mia Weinstein ’32, and Hannah White ’32 – finished tied for 5th with big wins against St. Mark Catholic School E and St. Rita E.
