Mathcounts Team Earns Second Place at Chapter Competition

In early February, the Greenhill Mathcounts team had an outstanding result at the Preston Trails - Northeast TX Chapter Competition, finishing in second place among the 30-some northeast Texas schools.

Evan Tsai ’28 (7th place) and Tim Csallner ’28 (13th place) advanced to the Countdown round by virtue of their high individual scores. Bryan Kuang ’28, Ansh Gandhi ’28, and Anderson Tsao ’29 also all finished in the top quartile of players. By virtue of the very strong showing, the official team advanced to the State Mathcounts competition.

The Chapter competition is the first of three scholastic competitions for all Mathcounts students; top performers at each of the Chapter competitions advance to the State competition, and top performers at State go to Nationals in May.

Each competition has four rounds: the Sprint test, the Target test, the Team round, and the Countdown round.

In the two test rounds, students work by themselves answering 30 questions in 40 minutes without a calculator (Sprint round) or 4 pairs of questions over 6 minutes/pair with a calculator (Target round).
For the Team round, teams of 4 work together to solve a set of 10 questions with the use of a calculator; individual competitors can join up to and solve the Team round as informal teams.
The Countdown round is unofficial for qualification purposes but is very exciting, as the top-scoring students over the Sprint/Target tests face off, head-to-head, in a series of quick-thinking math problems – all in front of the audience of other players, coaches, parents, and officials.

Mathcounts is a national program for 6th-8th grade students and is dedicated to cultivating students’ love of all math.
