Greenhill Welcomes Students for 2015-2016

Greenhill School’s campus filled with energy to the point of "buzzing" this morning as approximately 1290 students flooded campus for the 2015-2016 school year. Students and teachers, new and returning, welcomed each other with smiles and hugs.

Lower Schoolers, carrying backpacks as big as themselves, bounced from the carpool line, to the playground, to their classrooms, hugging teachers and fellow friends and diving into lessons awaiting them.

Middle Schoolers gathered in Phillips Gym for an opening assembly, where a special spelling bee helped convey the annual theme of Compassion, and brought a few laughs as well.

And in Upper School, after the traditionally white and black-clad seniors finished chanting "seniors" as loud as possible, students gathered to hear remarks.

Laura Ross, Head of Upper School, encouraged students to think about the annual theme of compassion and what that means in our behavior and action. She cited research from the Greater Good Science Center at University of California Berkeley proving that compassion training generates a more positive and mindful individual, cultivating a happier, healthier state of mind, eliminating selfishness and entitlement, focusing on community, and striving for collective well-being.

"It all comes back to compassion," said Mrs. Ross. "It is the active act of attempting to know and understand another person. So let’s commit ourselves to that ideal this year, and let’s talk about it and do something about it when we see it not happening. We owe it to each other and we owe it to ourselves. Welcome back to school – I couldn’t be more excited to see you all. Have a great day."

In opening assemblies across each of the divisions, Head of School Scott Griggs explained the transitions of this year, involving temporary dining accommodations for the next three weeks, and The Marshall Family Performing Arts Center opening in January. Most importantly, he charged students to do their best, act always with compassion, and to think about how they could make this year even better than their last.
