Greenhill Alumna Awarded Foreign Affairs Fellowship

Late last year, Michelle Lee ’19 was awarded a 2023 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship following a highly competitive nationwide contest. A distinguished panel selected her out of almost 900 outstanding candidates.

The Pickering Fellowship will support Michelle through a two-year master’s degree in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service. It will also provide extensive professional development opportunities, including internships, mentors, and skills training.

As part of the Pickering Fellowship Program, Michelle will work at the U.S. Department of State for their domestic internship in the summer of 2024. In the summer of 2025, the U.S. Department of State will send her overseas to intern in a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to get hands-on experience with U.S. foreign policy and the work of the Foreign Service.

Upon successful completion of the program, Michelle will become a U.S. diplomat in the summer of 2025, embarking on one of the most challenging and rewarding careers of service to her country. She will work to promote peace, prosperity, and human dignity around the world.

The Pickering Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Howard University, supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.

Michelle, daughter of Daniel Lee and Mary Bang, was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Dallas, Texas. She has participated in the London School for Ethics and Global Leadership program and the Overseas Korean Foundation, where she debated the Scottish Referendum and the reunification of the Korean peninsula, respectively. Her past work experience includes interning for Artis Ventures and Lumen, an NGO that promotes information freedom for all.

Michelle has also interned for government organizations such as USAID/RDMA Thailand, the United States House of Representatives, and the United States Department of State. Michelle is eager to attend graduate school and continue her studies on North Korean affairs, economic policy, and human rights as a Pickering Fellow and future US Foreign Service Officer.

Congratulations Michelle!
