Volunteer Opportunities to Honor Dr. King’s Legacy of Service

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, an act that transformed Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a day committed to continuing Dr. King's legacy of service. To honor that legacy, we have compiled a list of pandemic-friendly volunteer activities for our Greenhill families to consider.
  • “Family Clean Out Your Closet Day” – donate gently used clothing or toys to North Dallas Shared Ministries.
  • Support children who are experiencing homelessness at Vogel Alcove.
  • Organize a canned food drive in your neighborhood to donate to a food bank.
  • Donate gently used books to local hospitals or daycares.
  • Make “Thank You” cards for healthcare workers who are still working very hard to care for patients with COVID-19.
  • Foster a pet or collect old sheets and towels to donate to an animal shelter like Operation Kindness.
  • Create “busy bags” with crayons, coloring books, and puzzles for patients at a local children’s hospital.
  • Adopt an elderly neighbor and help with yard work.
  • Pick up trash in your neighborhood.
  • Build a birdhouse for an elderly or homebound neighbor.
  • Organize a donation drive in your neighborhood and collect gently used coats and blankets or new gloves and hats for a local homeless shelter.
  • This dry bean soup recipe can be made at home and donated to North Dallas Shared Ministries or other area food banks.
