Greenhill Debate Success at Tournaments

Greenhill Debate students had a busy and successful month of competition at the EurOpen Debate Tournament, Annual Longhorn Classic Tournament, Annual Berkner TFA Tournament, Isidore Newman School Invitational, and the Winter Holiday Open. Highlights from these tournaments include Greenhill Debate’s third consecutive win in a tournament, Greenhill students sweeping the top 4 spots in individual speaker awards, and a Greenhill student placing top in her division for individual speaker at an international tournament.
 
EurOpen Debate Tournament                            
The EurOpen Debate Tournament, the largest World Schools event in Europe, took place virtually on November 12-17, 2021. Greenhill seniors Cameron Kettles ‘22 and Ashley Shan ‘22, members of the USA Debate team, debated the best and brightest from around the world and excelled in the competition. Ashley’s team advanced to the knockout rounds only to meet Cameron’s team in the first elimination round. Cameron’s team advanced to the quarterfinals where they lost a split decision to the eventual tournament champions from Singapore. In addition, Cameron was the tournament's third individual speaker out of over 400 students from around the world.
The USA Debate Team reached the finals of the EurOpen invitational and were the runners up on a 3-2 split decision to Singapore.
 
Annual Longhorn Classic Tournament
The Greenhill Debate team competed in the 24th Annual Longhorn Classic Tournament on December 3-5, 2021, their first in-person debate tournament since March of 2020.
The World Schools team of Cameron Kettles ‘22, Caroline Greenstone ‘22, Ashton Higgins ‘22, and Ashley Shan ‘22 won the tournament over Southlake Carroll. This victory marks the third time in a row the team has championed this tournament. The team of Sophia Mohamed ‘23, Carcyn Coleman ‘23, Nate Stitt ‘23, Kaden Alibhai '24, and Vivvan Gupta '24 reached the quarterfinals. Several students won individual speaker awards. In the top ten were third speaker Ashton Higgins ‘22, seventh speaker Sophia Li ‘24, and tenth speaker Kaden Alibhai ‘24. 
In Policy Debate, the team of Shruti Siva ‘22 and Krish Mysoor ‘24 reached the quarterfinals. Shruti was also named the eighth individual speaker. Teja Mettu ‘23 and Shreeya Madhavanur ‘23 advanced to the elimination rounds and reached the octo-finals. 
In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Krutin Devesh ‘22 was the fifth individual speaker out of 150 students and reached the octo-finals. 
 
Annual Berkner TFA Tournament
The Greenhill Debate Team competed in the 11th Annual Berkner TFA Tournament over the weekend of December 11-12, 2021, and won four of the five divisions in which they competed, in addition to finishing second in the other division. Close to fifty students competed for Greenhill in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, and World Schools Debate at this tournament. 
In Varsity Policy Debate, the team of Krish Mysoor ‘24 and Shruti Siva ‘22 were the champions and closed out the final round with Varsha Gande ‘22 and Teja Mettu ‘23. Madison Rojas ‘23 and Isabel Martinez ‘23 were in the semifinals. Harris Xie ‘25 and Gautam Chamarthy ‘25 advanced to the quarterfinals. The top four individual speaker awards were won by Greenhill with Krish being the top individual speaker, Shruti the second individual speaker, Madison the third individual speaker, and Isabel the fourth individual speaker. 
In Varsity Lincon Douglas Debate, Emma Nguyen ‘23 reached the finals and was a runner-up. Adam Kesselman ‘24, Christopher Row ‘23, and Jaden Watt ‘23 were octo-finalists. In individual speaker awards, Emma Nguyen '23 was the top individual speaker and Adam Kesselman ‘24 was the second individual speaker. 
In World Schools Debate, the team of Saida Bidiwala ‘25, Varun Mukund ‘25, Aditi Vikram ‘25, Sherry Zhang ‘25, and Ashton Higgins ‘22 were tournament champions. The team of Abeera Amer ‘24, Reyna Diamond '24, Angela Kamgang ‘24 and Michelle Phu ‘24 advanced to the quarterfinals. Aditi Vikram ‘25 was the second individual speaker; Ashton Rischer ‘23 was the fifth individual speaker and Reyna Diamond ‘24 was the ninth individual speaker. 
In Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sarah Koshy ’26 was the champion, and Lucas Jakubcanin ‘25 advanced to the quarterfinals. This is the second tournament in a row that Sarah has championed, and she was also the top individual speaker. 
In Novice Policy Debate, Evie Kwei ‘25, Ella Ou-Yang ‘25, Dhiya Hemchand ’26, and Rory Liu ‘26 closed out the final round. Nora Ahearn ‘26 and Olivia Ortley-Gragg ‘25 reached the semifinals. Neha Bachu ‘25 and Pranav Sreenivas ‘25 reached the quarterfinals. Evie was the top individual speaker, Ella was the second individual speaker, Pranav was the third individual speaker, Dhiya was the ninth speaker and Rory rounded out the top ten in individual speaker awards. 
 
Isidore Newman School Invitational
The Greenhill Debate team competed virtually at the 43rd Isidore Newman School Invitational on December 10-12, 2021.
In World School Debate, the team of Kaden Alibhai ‘24, Carcyn Coleman ‘23, Sophia Mohamed ‘23, Nate Stitt ‘23, and Vivaan Gupta ‘24 reached the finals, losing a 2–1 decision. Nate Stitt was the top individual speaker of the tournament. Emily Hu ‘24 was the sixth individual speaker and Sophia Li '24 was the tenth individual speaker. 
 
Winter Holiday Open
Cameron Kettles ’22 was the top individual speaker in her division of the Winter Holiday Open, an event that is historically the largest in Europe, bringing together teams from the Americas Europe, and Asia for over five days of virtual competition. The USA Team also won the Championship of the Winter Holiday Open.
