Debate Kicks Off Competition Season with Success

Congratulations to the Greenhill Speech and Debate Team! The team began the season by competing in two events: the Grapevine Classic Speech and Debate Tournament and the Greenhill Fall Classic Debate Tournament. Students received notable honors including:
 
  • First-place in World Schools Debate at the Grapevine Classic: Caroline Greenstone '22, Ashton Higgins '22, Carcyn Coleman '23, Sophia Mohamed '23, and Nate Stitt '23
  • Top individual speaker of the Greenhill Fall Classic: Cameron Kettles ’22
  • More than ten students across both tournaments earned individual speaker awards

Grapevine Classic Speech and Debate Tournament
The 33rd Annual Grapevine Classic Speech and Debate Tournament was a success for the team competing in the World Schools Debate division.
 
Caroline Greenstone '22, Ashton Higgins '22, Carcyn Coleman '23, Sophia Mohamed '23, and Nate Stitt '23 took first place. The team of Emily Hu '24, Sophia Li '24, Pooja Sanghvi '24, Natalie Stachowiak '24, and Jeannette Yang '24 reached the semifinals, only to face off against the their teammates. Sophia Li ’24, Natalie Stachowiak ’24, Nate Stitt ’24, Emily Hu ’24, and Caroline Greenstone ’22, all won individual speaker awards.
 
The team of Shruti Siva ’22 and Shreeya Madhavanur ’23 competed in Policy Debate, reaching the quarterfinals of the varsity division. In the junior varsity policy division, Seth Lee ’24 and Pranav Joshi ’24 reached the semifinals. Both teams lost very close split decisions in their debates.
 
Seth Lee ’24 and Pranav Joshi ’24 won individual speaker awards. In junior varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate, Adam Kesselman ’24 reached the semifinals and won an individual speaker award.
 
Greenhill Fall Classic Debate Tournament
At the 35th Annual Greenhill Fall Classic Debate Tournament, competitors from some of the best school teams in the country, the USA Debate National and Development teams, and teams from Mexico participated in early-season online competition.
 
In World Schools Debate, the team of Caroline Greenstone '22, Ashton Higgins '22, and Aimee Stachowiak ’24 reached the final round losing an incredibly close split decision to the USA Debate National Team (of which Cameron Kettles ’22 is a member).
 
The team of Emily Hu '24, Sophia Li '24, Pooja Sanghvi '24, and Jeannette Yang '24 reached the quarterfinals. Carcyn Coleman ’23, Sophia Mohamed ’23, Nate Stitt ’23, and Kaden Alibhai ’24 reached the octofinals only to be matched against another Greenhill team. Cameron Kettles ’22 is a member of the team that won the tournament (the USA Debate National Team) and she was the top individual speaker of the tournament. Ashley Shan ’24 is a member of the USA National Team and reached the quarterfinals.
 
A group of students new to the World Schools division excelled as well. Varun Mukund ’25, Aditi Vikram ’25, Saida Bidiwala ’25, and Sherry Zhang ’25 reached the finals of the novice division, placing second. The team of Abeera Amer ’24, Michelle Phu ’24, Reyna Diamond ’24, and Angela Kamgang ’24 reached the semifinals, only to be paired against the other Greenhill team. Sherry Zhang ’25, Varun Mukund ’25, and Angela Kamgang ’24 all received individual speaker awards.
