The Evergreen Named Best Newspaper by The Dallas Morning News
The Evergreen, Greenhill's student newspaper, was selected as the Best Newspaper in The Dallas Morning News' 30th Annual High School Journalism Competition. This year's competition featured nearly 500 entries from 24 schools, which were judged by News editors and reporters.
Congratulations to Gregg Jones, The Evergreen Faculty Advisor, Leah Nutkis & Raag Venkat, Editors-in-Chief, and the entire staff. Below is a list of winners and finalists for The Evergreen.
BEST NEWSPAPER The Evergreen - WINNER Submission #1 | Submission #2 | Submission #3 DMN Comments: "We were impressed at the level of reporting and variety of topics covered in The Evergreen, making it the winner for the Best Newspaper category for the second year in a row. The Greenhill School newspaper staff did not shy away from deeply reporting news events such as the pandemic, the 2020 presidential election, and social justice with a student-focused lens."
EDITORIAL The Evergreen - WINNER Submission DMN Comments: "The Greenhill editorial board focuses on a very specific issue that directly impacts everyone on campus: students who don’t follow masking rules. And the board calls on administrators to take a specific action, enforce the rules. The argument is well supported by data and facts about the status of students who aren’t following the rules. The writing is clear and the argument is disciplined in its focus, making this a powerful opinion piece."
SPORTS REPORTING Payton Blalock, Emma Hoffman & Ava Iwasko - WINNER Submission DMN Comments: "The best writers understand grammar and know when to break its rules. The writers do a terrific job of using sentence fragments to paint a succinct picture of what awaits swimmers before they enter the water. Alliteration, ... “pervasive pandemic precautions,” is the topper. The grasp and love for the English language simply shines through this story."
SPORTS FEATURE Lane Herbert & Avery Franks - Finalists Submission DMN Comments: "A well-researched, coherent report on why student athletes narrow their focus to single sports instead of participating in several, to the dismay of administration officials. Nice job getting both sides of an interesting story."
SPORTS FEATURE Raag Venkat - Finalist Submission DMN Comments: "Good work presenting the difficulties faced by aspiring college athletes and the opportunities lost during the pandemic."
NEW REPORTING Nate Stitt & Valerie Xu - Finalists Submission DMN Comments: "The reporters’ use of a diverse range of sources successfully and thoroughly shows how students and staff think the then-upcoming presidential election will affect them, and their campus. The smart use of quotes underlines just how each source feels."
COMMENTARY Sarah Luan - Finalist Submission DMN Comments: "This first-person account of life in Wuhan is important to our understanding of the coronavirus. “It saddens me that people around the world only think of it as the city that started the pandemic,” Sarah writes. She demonstrated how hurtful words can be, and she helped us feel empathy for a place we might not know."
BEST PANDEMIC COVERAGE Isabel Martinez - Finalist Submission DMN Comments: "This was a very well reported and well written story. Good job showing the human side of the COVID-19 outbreak from the point of view of someone in Wuhan, as well as the personal ties this outbreak has between your school and the people suffering in China."
