Greenhill Junior Installs Rainwater Collection System in Preschool Playground

Junior Lane Herbert is changing the landscape of Greenhill’s Preschool. Quite literally!

For her Girl Scout Gold Award, the culminating service project requiring 80+ hours, Lane coordinated the installation of a rainwater barrel and irrigation system using roof rainwater to water the butterfly garden in the Preschool playground. (Lane was also instrumental in the design and planting of the garden itself a few years ago.)

On Friday, September 6, Lane presented the project at the Preschool morning assembly, sharing the importance of rainwater collection to prevent wasted resources. She also thanked her parents, Frances and Michael Herbert; her advisor, Petra Lynch; and Director of Facilities Mike Willis for their help and support. “I couldn’t have done it without my team,” she said. “From the beginning to the end, I had my team behind me. There were so many people I had to meet with to get this project approved, and Mr. Willis was a huge advocate for me during the entire process. I’m very grateful for all the support.”

Later on that Friday afternoon, Preschool students had the opportunity to help decorate the rain barrel with their own handprints. (See photos on social media!) Thanks to Lane, all our preschoolers will now understand and witness the importance of conserving rainwater and channeling water resources.

Lane hopes this project will not only be a green and sustainable solution, but also a pilot project for future rainwater irrigation ideas on campus.

Congratulations Lane!
