Charles Leathers, One of Greenhill's Original Founders, Passes Away

The Greenhill community is saddened by the passing of Charles "Charley" Leathers, one of the original four founding members of Greenhill School, at the age of 96.Leathers and Bernard Fulton met at Texas Country Day School when Fulton was the head varsity football coach and Leathers was his assistant. When Fulton became the Assistant Headmaster at Texas Country Day School, Leathers soon took over his responsibilities on the gridiron. When Fulton was asked to start a coeducational school, the person he turned to was Leathers, who had such an avid following at Texas Country Day School that many boys transferred to Greenhill to be with him.Leathers coached football for the Hornets, compiling a 14-7-2 record in four seasons, including an undefeated season in 1951. He also founded the boys basketball and track programs at Greenhill. As Fulton's right-hand man, Leathers even offered to go without a salary the first year in order to make budget. In addition, Leathers also chose Green and Gold as the school colors. In 1976, the Charley Leathers Award was established to honor the senior boy or girl who best demonstrates ability, cooperation, loyalty, leadership, sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play in the Greenhill athletic program.A Celebration of Life for Charley will be held on Wednesday, May 15th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Nugget Casino, in Sparks, NV in Southern Pacific Rooms E and F on the third floor. The program (slideshow and talks) will start at 5:30 p.m.
