COVID-19 Protocols

Greenhill will partner with and follow the guidance of Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) when handling any cases of COVID-19 that are identified in Greenhill students and employees. DCHHS uses detailed guidelines that are determined by the symptoms students have, the potential contact with a lab confirmed case or suspected case of COVID-19, and the amount of community transmission. Exact steps that the school will take will be determined on a case-by-case basis, but below is a high-level summary of what families may expect in the event of COVID-19 cases on campus. Please note that this information may change at any time due to the course of the virus and guidance from state and local officials. Information last updated on August 16, 2021.

If a student or employee has symptoms, tests positive for, or as been exposed to someone with COVID-19 symptoms or a confirmed case (with or without symptoms), please stay home and notify the nurse’s office of the symptoms or exposure.

SYMPTOMS ON CAMPUS
In the event a student or employee starts showing signs or symptoms of COVID-19 while on campus, then the school will take the following actions:

  • Students with COVID-19 symptoms (such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath) will be immediately separated in a designated isolation space.
  • A member of the Nurse’s Office will contact the student’s family. Parents should plan to pick up students from Greenhill within 30 minutes and follow-up with their healthcare provider.
  • Employees with symptoms should notify their supervisor and the Nurse’s office, leave campus, and follow up with their healthcare provider.
  • The Nurse’s Office will remain in close contact with DCHHS about any members of the community who show symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Areas used by the sick person will be closed for cleaning and sanitizing.

LAB CONFIRMED STUDENT OR EMPLOYEE CASE OF COVID-19
If the school becomes aware that a student or employee has tested positive for COVID-19, then then Nurse’s Office will notify DCHHS to identify the course of action. The actions the school will take will vary based on the most up-to-date information about COVID-19 and specific cases in the community.

At a minimum, the school will:

  • Notify the school community of a positive case on campus via the COVID-19 dashboard. The only identifying information that will be shared is the division in which the case occurred.
  • Notify all close contacts within the community of the confirmed case and direct them to quarantine at home for the period of time identified by DCHHS. Close contacts are identified as people that are six feet (or closer) to an infected person for 15 minutes or more. Per the CDC, there is one exception to this guideline in the school setting: In the K–12 indoor classroom setting, the close contact definition excludes students who were within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student where
    • both students were engaged in consistent and correct use of well-fitting face masks;
    • other K–12 school prevention strategies (such as universal and correct mask use, physical distancing, and increased ventilation) were in place in the K–12 school setting.
  • Conduct additional cleaning and sanitation of spaces used by the sick person.

RETURNING TO CAMPUS AFTER ILLNESS, COVID-19 EXPOSURE, or TESTING POSITIVE FOR COVID-19
Returning to campus will be highly dependent upon the level of community transmission. Below are current guidelines for return, but these could change at any time. We will update this section, and others, as we receive new information. The Health Services staff will work closely with the administration and the front office staff to coordinate the student’s return to school. EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS & NO CLOSE CONTACT
If an individual is experiencing symptoms and has not had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, that person should take a COVID-19 PCR test and then contact their health care provider for possible follow up. This policy is the same as last year.

  • Positive Test Result: Isolate for 10 days and follow three-step process for return:
    • At least 24 hours have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications)
    • Improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough)
    • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms have appeared.
  • Negative Test Result: Return to school in accordance with routine school illness policy.

EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS & CLOSE CONTACT
If an individual is experiencing symptoms, and that person has been a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, then that person will need to take a PCR test for COVID-19, then do the following.
  • Negative Test Result: complete 10-day quarantine and return to campus as long as there are no symptoms and fever free. The close contact may not test out of quarantine if experiencing symptoms.
    • These rules apply if the person is vaccinated or unvaccinated.

NO SYMPTOMS & CLOSE CONTACT
If an individual has no symptoms, but they are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, then the recommended course of action varies based on vaccination status.

If fully vaccinated:

  • No quarantine required.
  • Take a PCR COVID-19 test 3-5 days after exposure.
  • Wear a mask indoors for 14 days or until a negative COVID test is received.
  • Note: If a family member in the household is the close contact, please contact the school nurse.
If not fully vaccinated:
  • Quarantine for 7 days
  • Take a PCR COVID-19 test on day 5.
  • If the test is negative, return to school on day 8.
  • If the test is positive, isolate for 10 days.
  • If symptoms start before day 5, isolate, take a PCR test for COVID, and follow steps from EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS & CLOSE CONTACT

COVID-19 POSITIVE PERSON IN THE HOME
Due to the highly transmittable nature of Delta, if you have a positive COVID case in your home, quarantine guidelines will be handled on a case-by-case basis. As we start the year, both vaccinated and unvaccinated employees and students should plan to stay home until they have had a conversation with Director of Student Health Services Katie Trimmer.

CONTAINMENT

  • Contact tracing will occur in collaboration with the local health department.
  • Students or employees who are identified as close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 must follow the guidelines above to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 on campus.
  • Close contacts who were diagnosed with COVID-19 by either a PCR or Antigen test for COVID-19 within the last 90 days will not need to quarantine unless they become symptomatic.
