This panel brings together alumni working in the field of social justice and advocacy. We will discuss the challenges and rewards of careers in social justice, companies are exploring corporate responsibility/philanthropy these days.
Chelsey Birgisdóttir '11 Chelsey Birgisdóttir is the Policy Associate at the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties where she works with community partners to help develop and execute campaigns addressing police accountability and transparency. She represents the ACLU-SDIC in the Coalition for Police Accountability and Transparency (CPAT) and also works with other ACLU California affiliates as part of the Police Practices and Tech and Civil Liberties teams to support the development and passage of legislation at the state level. Birgisdottir also does community education work where she shares data that reveals the extent and magnitude of biased policing in our region.
Payal Dalal '99 Payal currently serves as the Senior Vice President, Social Impact, International Markets at the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth. She joined the Center in April 2018, oversees the Center’s philanthropic investments around the globe and manages the Center’s international team across Dubai, London, Miami, New York and Singapore.
Previously, she was Head of Global Community Programs for Standard Chartered Bank. In this capacity, she designed the Bank’s new community investment strategy and oversaw all programs related to education, girls’ empowerment, global health, emergency response, and disaster relief. Payal joined Standard Chartered in July 2008 as the Head of Public Affairs for the Americas With a professional background in international philanthropy and politics, Payal has worked for a wide range of public sector organizations including the World Affairs Council, the Global Philanthropy Forum and the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Payal also worked on foreign policy for the Office of President William J. Clinton. In 2014, President and Secretary Clinton appointed Payal to be a program advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative; she continued in this role until CGI ceased in 2016.
Payal has extensive experience in financial services as well. Prior to joining Standard Chartered, she worked on the launch of the AT&T Universal Savings and Reward Card for Citi. Payal serves as a trustee for Global Impact UK and is a fellow at the RSA and the Institute for Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. A Texas native, Payal has a BA with honors from Stanford University and an MBA and an MPA from New York University.
Moderator: Monsie Muñoz '05 Monsie Muñoz is the Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion at Greenhill School. She started teaching in Italy after graduating from Williams College. Over the course of her 11 year career, she has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels. As a career educator, she understands the power of education and the positive impact it can have on all students. She prioritizes the creation of a vibrant and engaging school environment for all students that celebrates each them for who they are and what they bring to their communities. Her current role as Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion allows her to focus on creating equitable and inclusive practices by shaping curriculum, engaging in community conversations, and creating programming across divisions.
