  • Q. What is the Community Conversations series?

    The Community Conversation series is a special Greenhill Parent Forum event dedicated to creating platforms for cross-cultural dialogues. We want to celebrate the diverse community we have built while empowering our parents to talk to their kids about the social and racial issues that have been surfacing in the national dialog today.
    Many of our children are asking tough questions about race and discrimination, whether they are second graders or seniors. We want to help prepare our parent community to have these important discussions with their children so that our kids can become better citizens, leaders and friends.
  • Q. Who should attend these events?

    These events are geared toward all Greenhill members from all ethnic backgrounds who support, teach or attend any school divisions. Anyone who is interested in listening to new perspectives, exploring ideas about race and participating in thought provoking group discussion should attend. Please note there are different events geared for differing audiences. Please visit the Community Conversations website to determine date, time, locations and audiences for each event.
  • Q. Do I have to attend all events?

    No. Each event is independent of one another other. While we encourage you to attend as many events that interest you, there is no requirement to attend all of them.
  • Q. How do I register?

    There is a registration link to each event on the event web page. Click the link for each event and complete the registration form. You will have to register separately for each event you wish to attend.

  • Q. When and where is the interactive workshop being held?

    This interactive workshop is scheduled from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 17th, 2019 in the Marshall Performing Arts Center (MPAC). Light bites will be served from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Rose Hall. Parents, Faculty and Staff will be separated into divisional-specific workshops during the event.
  • Q. Who can attend this event?

    This interactive event is geared toward all Greenhill parents in all schools. We also welcome any Greenhill faculty and staff to join the interactive workshops.
  • Q. Can I bring my Upper School student or a parent from other schools?

    This event is not open to the public and is geared for Greenhill adults (parents, faculty and staff) only. Please note that childcare will not be provided.
  • Q. What topics will be addressed?

    We are excited to partner with the Anti-Defamation League, our nations’ premier civil rights / human relations organization to lead us through an interactive workshop developed just for the Greenhill community. Trained ADL facilitators will share best practices, tools and strategies on HOW to have conversations with our children and students on topics dealing with race, implicit bias and social justice. While we recognize that these are complex, and multi-layered, our true intent is to encourage dialog and improve cultural competencies.
    During the interactive workshop, participants will breakout into smaller groups based upon school division (PS/LS, MS and US). An ADL facilitator will lead each divisional workshop. They will cover developmentally appropriate ways for participants to help improve their cultural competencies.
    Consider this event as an invitation to be more curious, courageous and to brainstorm ways to “be the change, we wish to see” in our community and world. We have to begin to prepare ourselves as parents and create spaces for our children to have meaningful conversations about the racial tensions we see in the world, our city and in our communities.

  • Q. When and where will the dinners be held?

    The small group dinners for parents, faculty and staff will be held in various locations.
    For our Parent Community: Our small group dinners will be held on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 in the homes of 12 Greenhill host families from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. There are a total of 120 registration spots available for Greenhill parents. The dinners will be held at the same time but at separate locations. Participants are asked to arrive promptly at 6:00 p.m.
    For our Greenhill Faculty and Non-administrative staff, small group dinners will be held on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m. Please meet in the Crossman Dining Hall on the Greenhill campus.
  • Q. Who can attend the dinners?

    This event is open to Greenhill parents, faculty and non-administrative staff only. Please note that childcare will be not be provided for this event. This is an adult-only event, so please arrange for childcare so that you can attend the duration of the event. Please note seating is limited for this event.
  • Q. Can I choose the host family I wish to join for dinner?

    Each registered participant will be assigned a table to ensure that each table has diverse representation among the dinner guests.
  • Q. Is there a cost to attend the dinner?

    There is no cost to attend the dinners. Dinner is provided through the generosity of our hosts. Some hosts might plan a potluck dinner and may ask you to contribute a dish. Your host will contact you prior to the dinner to share more information about the type of dinner they are planning.
  • Q. Is there a cost for Greenhill faculty/staff to attend the dinner?

    There is no cost to attend the dinners. The non-alcoholic beverages, buffet dinner and desserts are provided by the generosity of the Parents' Association and parent volunteers. There will be vegetarian-friendly dishes available.
  • Q. How do I let my dinner host know about my dietary needs?

    We will ask the hosts to provide vegetarian options and to avoid serving pork and nuts in the meal. The hosts will contact their guests about a week before the dinners to inform them about the plans for the evening. Hosts will also inquire about dietary restrictions at that time. Please note that our hosts are being very gracious with their time and will not be able to make a special meal for every attendee.
  • Q. How many dinner guests will be assigned to a table?

    There will be a total of 10 dinner guests including the host couple. Additionally, there will be a trained facilitator at each dinner table.
  • Q. Can I bring my spouse or partner to the dinner?

    Yes. You may attend a dinner with your spouse/partner or attend on your own. If you are attending with your spouse, please register together on one registration page. If you both want to participate, but dine separately, please fill out two separate forms. Only spouses and partners may register together. Friends and colleagues must register separately.
  • Q. Can I bring my spouse or partner, who is not a Greenhill employee, to the facility dinner?

    No. At this time, the faculty dinner is an opportunity for staff from varying backgrounds and divisions to have intimate conversation about how race and racial biases may enter the classroom and workplace. Because this conversation is specific to the Greenhill community, we are limiting the faculty registration to Greenhill employees only. If you and your spouse are both Greenhill employees, then feel free to register separately for the event. Please note, that you may be assigned to dine at different tables.
  • Q. For faculty: If I am both an Employee and a Parent at Greenhill School which event should I register?

    If you are both an employee and a parent at Greenhill School you have the option to choose whether to register for the parent event or the faculty staff event. At the parent event, you and your spouse can register to attend a dinner together. At the faculty event, you will be seated at a dinner table with faculty members across all divisions. The conversations will be different for each of these events. Choose the event that interests you more.
  • Q. Will I know anyone at the dinner?

    Perhaps. Or this may be an opportunity to meet new people within the Greenhill community.
  • Q. What is Dallas Dinner Table?

    Dallas Dinner Table, founded in 1999, is a local DFW non-profit that holds dinners designed to encourage communications about race and ethnicity, educate participants about perspectives held by other races in Dallas, and empower citizens to develop relationships with people from a variety of racial and ethnic groups.
    Our small group dinner discussions will be in conjunction with the Dallas Dinner Table and is modeled after their annual event held on MLK day. We will be leveraging DDT's proven process and materials as well as their trained DDT facilitators who will guide the discussion.
  • Q. What will be discussed at the dinner?

    The small group dinners will provide an opportunity to hear and share diverse perspectives about the impact of race on the daily lives our Greenhill families and faculty. The dinners are designed to:
    • Encourage communication about race relations and the impact of ethnicity on relationships.
    • Educate participants about perspectives held by others related to race relations
    • Empower citizens to develop relationships with people from a variety of racial/ethnic groups.
  • Q. Will the conversations be recorded?

    No. We will ask for a group photo at the event but the conversations will remain private. We will ask each facilitator to share key learnings from the dinner but it will not be attached to a particular person or participant.
  • Q. What should I bring to the dinner?

    An open mind and willingness to share personal experiences. Trained facilitators will lend structure to the evening and utilize established techniques designed to minimize debate and maximize understanding among people representing different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Q. Does registering guarantee a spot at the dinner?

    Registration does not guarantee a spot to the dinner. We have a limited number of seats at each dinner and it is likely that we won’t be able to accommodate everyone who might want to attend. If we are unable to assign you to a table, we will notify you and present you with alternative options on how to participate in a local dine and discuss event. A waitlist will be maintained and utilized in the event of last minute cancellations.
