 | | Natural curiosity, boundless energy, and unflagging enthusiasm are the trademarks of students in grades five through eight. The Middle School incorporates these qualities into an exciting educational experience for young people who are experiencing rapid physical, intellectual, and emotional growth. Guided by dedicated and experienced teachers who forge meaningful connections, students thrive in an atmosphere that encourages risk, provides choice, and offers support.
Students in the Middle School have a full schedule of academic classes, elective and Fine Arts choices, and PE/athletics. Each student takes classes in English, mathematics, history, modern or classical language, and science. Teachers work collaboratively to create lessons that engage and inspire, all while promoting critical thinking and refining study skills and work habits. The menu of elective and Fine Arts choices is vast and includes everything from Robotics to Musical Theater to Creative Design. And PE in grades five and six provides foundational skills for interscholastic athletic competition in grades seven and eight.
The social and emotional growth of our students is of prime importance, and we are ever mindful of Greenhill’s Core Values of Honor, Respect, and Compassion. Wellness classes and a robust advisory program help to guide students in this critical period of growth. Grade level service learning opportunities extend into the community at large; we proudly join with Kindergarten students to serve Meals on Wheels as well as many other division-wide service projects. Middle School clubs such as Science Olympiad and Creative Writing Club offer interest-driven opportunities to develop leadership, confidence, and collaborative skills.
Middle School also is a time when we focus on the qualities of independence, responsibility and accountability. Reacting resolutely to setbacks is both taught and encouraged by our faculty, and the Middle School years are often a time of great maturation in this area. We like to say that Middle School students are not finished products, and we focus on the joys of the journey.
As the leader of the Middle School, I am proud to be along on the journey of so many wonderful young men and women. When faculty and families join together with students, we create an exciting program full of possibilities.
