|Q. ||What is the boy/girl ratio?|
|A. ||While we attempt to keep a 50-50 balance between boys and girls at each grade level, this is sometimes difficult to do. We give greater consideration to enrolling the most qualified and appropriate applicants.|
|Q. ||What is the student/teacher ratio?|
|A. ||In Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten the student/teacher ratio is 8:1. In Primer through grade 4 the average ratio is 16:1. In the Middle and Upper Schools, the average ratio is 18:1. In Lower School and Middle School, there are teaching fellows who have recently graduated from college assisting the lead teachers.|
|Q. ||Does Greenhill offer after school care?|
|A. ||Yes. The Greenhill Extended Day Program is available from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and is designed for students whose parents work during the day. Skilled and caring staff members create a safe and secure atmosphere for children. Extra-curricular activities such as tennis, swimming, pottery, etc. can be scheduled through Extended Day as well. Holiday Care is available on specific dates when our school is closed.|
|Q. ||What is Primer?|
|A. ||Primer benefits some children as a social/emotional/intellectual bridge between kindergarten and 1st grade. This year allows a child to mature at his/her natural pace while continuing to progress academically. You cannot apply to Primer. Your child must apply to 1st grade and be recommended for Primer by the Admission Committee. Your child's birthday must fall between March 1st and August 31st to be considered for Primer.|
|Q. ||What foreign languages are offered and when?|
|A. ||Spanish is offered in Pre-kindergarten through Grade 4, and Chinese is offered in Grades 1 through 4. In this format, Grades 1 through 4 receive both Spanish and Chinese in every rotation of the schedule in order to build foundational structures between language and culture. In Grade 5, students are exposed to language learning through a trimester-long sequence of Mandarin Chinese, Latin, and Spanish. Grade 6 students will choose Mandarin Chinese, Latin, or Spanish to study throughout their Middle School years. Upper School Students must begin their study in 9th grade and complete Level III of one language. Students often continue to study their Middle School language of choice throughout Upper School allowing them to achieve a strong depth and breadth of understanding in the language.|
|Q. ||Does Greenhill have a religious affiliation?|
|A. ||No. We accept students of any race, color, religious, national and ethnic origin, and offer all the rights and privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.|
|Q. ||Do Greenhill students wear uniforms?|
|A. ||No. However, there is a dress code to which all students must adhere to while on campus and attending school-sponsored activities.|
|Q. ||Does Greenhill provide transportation?|
|A. ||No. Many families form carpools. The Parents' Association and Division Office Coordinators help put together carpool groups at the beginning of each school year.|

|Q. ||Why does my child have to take a test?|
|A. ||Testing allows us to compare applicants to our current students and helps us to determine if there is a good fit. Test scores are only one part of the application process; the application in its entirety - teacher recommendations, grades, the visit/interview/observations and test scores - are reviewed by the Admission Committee individually and as a group. Please note, the strength of an individual application will be determined, in part, by the strength of the applicant pool.|
|Q. ||What is the CATS testing?|
|A. ||CATS testing is an individually administered measure of intellectual ability which is designed to assess a child’s capacity to learn. In this assessment your child will be asked to perform various tasks that will evaluate skills using verbal and visual cues. |
On verbal subtests your child will be asked to perform various tasks such as responding to questions by identifying specific pictures out of a group, naming pictures, and choosing pictures out of a group that have similarities.
On non-verbal, or performance, subtests your child will be asked to perform tasks that will require problem solving strategies using visual information. Constructing incomplete puzzles, reconstructing designs presented, and identifying missing parts of a shape are games used to assess a child’s perceptual and conceptual abilities involved in visual recognition and identification.
We know that no matter how remarkable or respected an assessment may be, no number can capture the innate intelligence or character of a child-especially when the child is so young! Therefore, we use this evaluation along with direct observations, teacher evaluations, parent statements and interviews to assess your child’s compatibility with our school.
|Q. ||What type of testing is given at each grade level?|
|A. ||Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten |
Applicants participate in a group test setting that evaluates their developmental areas as well as how well they follow directions and interact in a group setting. Each student also participates in an individual session to examine his/her verbal and non-verbal problem-solving skills through Collaborative Academic Testing Services (CATS).
Grades 1 and 2
Applicants will be evaluated on their performance, communication and behavior throughout a two to three hour testing session where grade level standardized tests will be administered. Each student will also participate in an individual session to examine his/her verbal and non-verbal problem-solving skills through Collaborative Academic Testing Services (CATS).
Grades 3 and 4
Applicants will participate in an admission test from the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) which consists of a reading comprehension test and a mathematics achievement test. Each student will also participate in an individual session to examine his/her verbal and non-verbal problem-solving skills through Collaborative Academic Testing Services (CATS).
Grades 5 - 12 The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is a three-hour “timed” admission test. The ISEE consists of three parts: (a) standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests; (b) reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about the student’s strengths and weaknesses in those areas; and (c) an essay section.
The ISEE evaluates not only the student's level of reading, but also his ability to comprehend material drawn from the sciences and humanities. The ISEE essay is timed and written in response to a prompt. This essay is not scored; it is photocopied and sent to the schools to which the student applies.
|Q. ||How should I prepare my child before testing?|
|A. ||Greenhill strongly discourages applicants from taking test prep courses or being tutored for admission testing. Test prep may result in anxiety and an admission decision that is not in the applicant's best interest. We believe the best way to prepare your child for testing is a good night's sleep and a good breakfast the day of testing.|

|Q. ||At what age can my child apply to Greenhill?|
|A. ||A child must be four years old by September 1st of the year he/she would begin Pre-kindergarten at Greenhill. A child must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year he/she would begin Kindergarten at Greenhill.|
|Q. ||When are your application deadlines?|
|A. ||The application deadline for Pre-kindergarten - Grade 4 is Friday, December 13, 2013.
The application deadline for Grades 5 - 12 is Friday, January 10, 2014.
The deadline to receive all required and supporting documents is Friday, January 24, 2014.
Notifications of the admission decision for the 2014-15 school year will be emailed March 7, 2014, after 4:00 p.m. All applications received after this date will be reviewed on a rolling admission basis.

|Q. ||Do siblings and alumni children have preference for admission?|
|A. ||As Greenhill is not the school for every child, we cannot guarantee the admission of siblings or children of alumni based on association alone. If the Admission Committee is faced with two equal candidates, one of whom is a sibling or child of alumni, that child is given preferential consideration.|
|Q. ||Can my child apply after the deadline?|
|A. ||We are unable to evaluate applicants to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten after the application deadlines and admission decisions have been mailed. For Grades 1-12, we understand that due to unforeseen family circumstances, some students may not be able to meet the deadline. We will try to accommodate these families by reviewing late applications on a rolling admission basis. Please contact the Admission Office at (972) 628-5910 before submitting a late application.|
|Q. ||Should I call to find out if my required documents have been received?|
|A. ||No. Our policy is we will call you about a week after the required document deadline if documents are missing.|
|Q. ||What should I do if my school issues grades after the required document deadline?|
|A. ||Schools issuing grades after our deadline should just mail the grades to us as soon as possible. Please do not fax.|
|Q. ||Does Greenhill have a wait pool?|
|A. ||Yes, we typically have wait pools for each grade level. Those applicants whom we believe are qualified for Greenhill, but for whom we do not have a spot are offered a place in the wait pool. There is not preference in the wait pool and it does not carry over from year to year.|
|Q. ||My child’s application was placed in the wait pool. What does this mean?|
|A. ||Each year, Greenhill typically receives more applications from qualified students seeking admission than we have room to accept. A wait pool is created to offer these qualified students an opportunity to remain in consideration for admission, should space become available.|
|Q. ||What is the probability for wait pool applicants to be invited for admission?|
|A. ||It varies every year, depending on the characteristics of the total applicant pool and the individual qualifications of wait pool candidates.|
|Q. ||How soon will we hear on the status of our application?|
|A. ||The deadline for accepted students to reply to Greenhill is Friday, March 21, 2014. Initial wait pool openings, if any, are determined soon after this date. In past years, additional openings have become available when there are changes in a student’s plans to attend Greenhill or when families move from the area. It is possible for a wait pool candidate to be invited for admission as late as August. Greenhill will notify all wait pool candidates when the admission period formally closes after the first week of school in the fall.
If your child is selected from the wait pool, you will receive a telephone call from the Admission Office.
|Q. ||Are wait pool applicants ranked in any way?|
|A. ||Greenhill DOES NOT rank applicants in the wait pool. As space becomes available, all wait pool candidates are individually reconsidered using the same process as applied to the initial review. The Director of Admission and Division Head will meet to review files and make decisions.|
|Q. ||Should my child accept an invitation to attend another school?|
|A. ||Yes, it is most important that your child to accept admission to another school. If Greenhill is unable to offer your child a space, you will want the assurance of enrollment in another school of your choice.|
|Q. ||Can my child do anything to strengthen their chances of being selected from the wait pool?|
|A. ||The fact that your child’s application was placed in the wait pool indicates that they are fully qualified to attend Greenhill School, so no additional action is required. We welcome any new information, however, that could be relevant to the admission process. Examples include a copy of a fourth-quarter report card or notice of awards received or other significant accomplishments.
