Currently, a group of Greenhill students and faculty have embarked on an immersive photographic safari to Asia. The Greenhill in China and Korea program provides students with an opportunity to experience the rich cultural traditions of two influential East Asian nations while documenting the experience through the photographic lens. Far from a sightseeing vacation, the program in China is designed to expose students to several Chinese minority cultures and to rigorously push students to engage and discover these cultures on their own terms.
The trip seeks to expand the student’s conception of China as a national, cultural, and social entity by providing a deeper understanding of what it means to live in the most populous nation on Earth, and exposing students to a sample of the myriad ways this experience manifests itself. In Korea, students will be be exposed to the Korean cultural tradition in the context of service. This portion of the program allows students to compare and contrast the cultural characteristics seen in China with those being experienced in Korea.
These comparisons will allow for an expanded conception of what the East Asian experience entails by illuminating nuances within and between East Asian nations. The program provides experiences that broaden students’ awareness of the role of foreign visitor and prepares them for their critical responsibility as world citizens.
