Greenhill Debate Team Continues to Earn National Recognition

The Greenhill Debate Team continues to earn national recognition for their outstanding results during the 2015-16 season.
 
The Dukes and Bailey Award for Season Long Excellence
Senior Bennett Eckert was honored with the "Dukes and Bailey Award for Season Long Excellence" as he was overwhelming recognized as the best debater in the nation this past season. In addition, senior Varad Agarwala finished second in the standings while senior Graham Baker finished sixth overall.
 
The Dukes and Bailey Cup is given annually to the Lincoln Douglas debate attending the National Debate Coaches Association National Tournament who has accumulated the highest qualifying point total in his/her top-five tournament placements during the year. The award is named after two of the foremost coaches in Lincoln Douglas Debate history.
 
National Debate Coaches Association (NDCA) National Championships
At the NDCA National Championships in Orlando, Eckert took home the tournament championship after defeating an outstanding opponent from Harvard Westlake in California. Agarwala earned a berth in the semifinals while Baker reached the quarterfinals where he bowed out to Bennett due to preliminary seedings. Bennett earned runner-ups honors in the Individual Speaker Awards while Agarwala and Baker finished fourth and sixth overall, respectively. In Policy Debate, juniors Grace Kuang and Sidarth Subramanian were double octofinalists.
 
Texas Forensic Association State Tournament
The Greenhill Debate Team captured the Texas Forensic Association State Championship for the fourth consecutive year in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Eckert and Agarwala - the top two seeds in the preliminary rounds - both went undefeated to earn a berth in the finals, resulting in a "close out" of the final round. This marked only the second time in tournament history that teammate closed out the final round. Bennett was selected as the second-best individual speaker while Agarwala was named the third-best individual speaker. Sophomore Shruthi Krishnan advanced to the Top-16 in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
 
Woodward Academy First and Second Year Championships
The Novice and Junior Varsity members of the Debate Team traveled to Woodward Academy at the beginning of Spring Break to compete in its First and Second Year Championships. In second year Lincoln Douglas Debate, Krishnan captured national championship honorr and was selected as the second-place individual speaker. Freshman Brian Zhou was a semifinalist and third-place individual spaker in the first year division. Freshman Anna Myers was a quarterfinalist and the sixth-best individual spaker in first year Lincoln Douglas Debate.
 
In Policy Debate, sophomores Sam Grimsley and Ali Khambati reached the semifinals in the second year division. Freshman Samar Ahmad and eighth-grader Josh Leffler reached the quarterfinals in the first year Policy Debate division.
