Former DISD Spokesperson Visits Urban Studies Class

Jon Dahlander, former Dallas Independent School District (DISD) Spokesperson, visited Greenhill as a guest lecturer/presenter for Becky Daniels’ Urban Studies classes on Thursday, October 13.

Serving for 20 years as the executive director of news and information for DISD, Mr. Dahlander confronted the immense challenges of the urban school district and outlasted 10 superintendents. The Dallas Morning News reported it as the most “thankless job in the city.”

At Greenhill, he spoke about education in the city of Dallas with a focus educational inequity. Urban studies students have been learning about the divide between north and south Dallas and they prepared questions to discuss with him.

Director of Equity and Inclusion Karen Bradberry said, “When I participated in Leadership DISD nearly seven years ago, I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Dahlander present the history of Dallas ISD and found it to be one of the most interesting, informative presentations delivered during the entire cohort experience. Not only did he share the history of the Dallas public school system, but he also taught me so much about the history of Dallas' racial, ethnic, religious, SES, and socio-political landscape. Today, when I ride around the city and see the architecture of Dallas schools, I still remember his presentation and marvel at the history living in those buildings. Each one has a story to tell.”

Mr. Dahlander has recently accepted a position with Highland Park ISD. Below is a link that provides a bit more information about him and his service in education.

Thank you Ms. Daniels for seizing such a great opportunity to connect our students’ learning to the real world!
