Greenhill Celebrates 66th Birthday

On September 9, 2016, we celebrated Founders’ Day with an opening assembly that involved the entire campus and commemorated our roots. From that first moment at 8:30 am on September 11, 1950, students have been gathering together to celebrate the unique community that is Greenhill School.

Head of School Scott Griggs opened the assembly by remarking on the accomplishments of our founder Bernard Fulton. Mr. Fulton had such visionary goals and strong convictions for what Dallas needed in a co-educational school and he set out to realize that goal. He embodied many of the traits that have become our core values and we strive to emulate and uphold what he started so long ago. We also took a moment to pause in silence to remember the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

The next two speakers shared messages about the special place that Greenhill holds in our lives. Senior Zach Rudner shared his thoughts on the unique Greenhill community and our role in striving for peace in the world. After the community sang Peace on Earth, Alumni Board President Michael Waldman ’98 highlighted how Greenhill memories and relationships have stayed with him throughout his life. " Throughout your journey here, you’ll find that faces change, walls change, and even courses change, but the one thing that remains the same is that you will always be part of this Greenhill community."

Assistant Head of School Tom Perryman led the audience in an appreciation of traditions during the early years of the School, such as gathering as an entire school – all students and faculty together from PreK-grade 12 - each morning. Following tradition, two Heart of the Hill (HOH) Groups were named after important figures in the School’s history. Eighth-grader Lindsay Jade Feinstein talked about the impact that Sally Estes, the first female board chair of Greenhill School. Senior Bryson Houston spoke about the history of Heart of the Hill, a program that brings students from all divisions together to foster community on our large campus, honoring the four students that founded the program back in 1998: Heather Klein ’98, Brooke Oberwetter Coon ’98, Irwin Sentilles ’98, and Kathryn Tobolowsky Kashkin ’98.

Senior Isabel Chavez spoke about the legacy of teacher Estelle Dickens. This year, the Annual Estelle Dickens drive will collect school supplies for Bush and Gooch Elementary Schools and Marsh Middle School. And fourth-grader Alex Sharma talked about one her favorite traditions of Founders’ Day that she shares with Founder Helen Fulton – ice cream at lunch!

Faculty leaders Barry Ide, Janice LaMendola, and Celeste Sanders ’00 were recognized as well as Penny Nicholson Award Recipient Lina Thompson.

Happy Birthday Greenhill!
