Hornet Sports Report - August 29, 2016

Football
The Greenhill football team recorded its first victory over crosstown rivals St. Mark's School of Texas in 13 years following a 42-27 road triumph on Friday evening.
 
Senior quarterback Konnell Woods connected on 17-of-27 passes for a career-high 420 yards and four touchdowns. In addition, Woods was the Hornets' top rusher as he finished with 71 yards on 13 carries and touchdown runs of 1 and 12 yards.
 
Woods gave the Hornets a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after connecting with Xavier Bryant for a 57-yard score. Bryant finished with a career-high 211 yards on six receptions to go along with scores of 57 and 79 yards. After a 33-yard touchdown strike to Bryson Houston and 1-yard Woods' score, the Hornets held a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.
 
After a pair of St. Mark's scores prior to halftime, the Hornets came out in the third quarter and scored on their first three possessions. Woods scored on a 12-yard run followed by throwing strikes of 79 yards to Bryant and 31 yards to Kassidy Woods to give Greenhill a 42-14 lead. The junior Woods caught four passes for 118 yards and one touchdown.
 
Jake Hershman rushed for 46 yards on 10 carries and caught three passes for 10 yards. Sophomore JT Herrscher led the Hornets with eight tackles while Bryant and Michael Simpson added three tackles.
 
The Hornets outgained St. Mark's by a 544-to-341 margin in the contest.
 
Boys Volleyball
The Greenhill boys volleyball opened up the 2016 season with a tournament title at the Red River Round-Up hosted by Casady School this past weekend.
 
In their opening match, the Hornets posted a 2-0 victory (25-14, 25-23) over Trinity Valley School. On Friday evening, the Hornets notched a 2-1 victory (23-25, 25-13, 15-9) over Kaizen Volleyball Club to close out the first day of action.
 
The Hornets defeated the host-program Casady School in straight sets (26-24, 25-19) to begin the second day of action. Following a 2-0 victory (25-13, 26-24) over Fort Worth Country Day, the Hornets cruise past Trinity Valley School, 2-0 (25-5, 25-18) in the semifinals. In the finals, the Hornets defeated Kaizen Volleyball Club by a 2-1 margin (23-25, 25-17, 25-11) to claim the tournament crown.
 
Girls Volleyball
The Greenhill girls volleyball team posted a second-place finish at the Houston Open Tournament this past weekend. The Hornets improved to 10-4 overall following the weekend tournament.
 
The Hornets opened up tournament action with a 2-0 victory (25-17, 25-14) over Northland Christian School. Jessica Pugh led the Hornets with six kills and nine digs while junior Michal Mathis finished with eight digs and six kills in the contest. Ellen Margaret Andrews posted five kills and eight digs while Allie Frymire dished out 14 assists to go along with seven digs and three kills.
 
In their second contest, the Hornets made quick work of The Village School in straight sets (25-12, 25-12). Andrews led the Hornets with 12 kills and five digs while Mathis added seven kills and nine digs. Frymire dished out 26 assists to go along with four digs, and Natalie Neiman finished five five kills in the contest.
 
The Hornets defeated All Saints' Episcopal School (Tyler, Texas) in straight sets (25-19, 25-15) in their final match of the afternoon. Andrews finished with 11 kills and eight digs while Frymire added 25 assists to go along with three digs. Jessica Pugh recorded six kills and six digs in the contest while Mathis finished with four kills and four digs.
 
The Hornets defeated the host-program Episcopal High School in straight sets (25-18, 25-17) in the semifinals. Pugh notched seven kills and nine digs in the match while Mathis added seven kills and three digs. Andrews added six kills and three digs while Frymire dished out 19 assists to go along with two digs and two kills.
 
In the finals, the Hornets suffered a 2-1 setback (20-25, 25-16, 25-14) to the Home School Christian Youth Association. Andrews and Mathis each posted eight kills and four digs in the match, and Frymire finished with 20 assists, two kills and two digs. Pugh recorded eight digs, five kills and two service aces in the match.
 
Cross Country
The Greenhill girls cross country team captured first-place honors at the Greehill/Luke's Locker 6-Mile Relay on Saturday morning at Norbuck Park.
 
Greenhill's team of senior Chandler Crates, juniors Cameron Crates and Ariana Luterman and freshman Maddie Hatfield finished first overall with a time of 36:50 in the 4A Division. The second Greenhill team - comprised of senior Madison Cook, junior Erin Puckett, sophomore Kyra Moran and freshman Kaiti Ness finished 8th overall with a time of 39:51.
 
On the boys' side, the Hornets' top team of juniors Daniel Brickman, Eli Krakow and Matthew Zweig along with sophomore Jacob Shepherd finished fourth overall with a time of 31:12. The squad from Sanger High School finished first while Decatur High School, St. Mark's School of Texas, Greenhill and Pilot Point High School rounded out the top-five.
