Greenhill Eighth-Grader Wins Beekeeping Scholarship

Rising eighth-grader Lane Herbert knows a lot about bees. She first started learning about beekeeping as a project with her father, when they taught themselves how to build a beehive, study flowers, plant seeds, and maintain a bee garden. This spring, her efforts paid off when she won the Collin County Hobby Bee Keepers scholarship for 2016-2017. With this, Lane will attend classes and is awarded her own hive and accessories. In the fall, she will give a presentation summarizing the results and conclusions of a field experiment she designs and implements.

Lane started the program last summer with the Collin County Honey Beekeepers Association. "I wrote an essay and submitted it to their program. I was one of eleven people who won the scholarship. The scholarship entailed $1000 worth of beekeeping equipment and six five-hour beekeeping seminars and classes. The scholarship will also enable the honey to be processed, so we will be able to have our own honey. We will probably get 20 pounds our first year!"

Lane explains that the benefits of beekeeping range far and wide. "My goals are to learn and to educate people in the importance of bees to agriculture and the world's food supply. One of the graduates from this scholarship program ships bees to California to pollinate the avocados and makes his living off of that."

Congratulations Lane!
