From the Alumni Office: Scott Cotlar '77

It is with great sadness that I write to share that Scott Cotlar '77 passed away on November 5, 2015.
"Scott passed away peacefully at home on November 5, 2015, surrounded by family after a 12 year journey with breast cancer. Scott was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. He attended the Greenhill School in Dallas, Texas, The University of Texas at Austin (BA), and the University of Houston Law Center (JD).

Scott left the practice of law after a few years to become an educator and school administrator in both the private and public sectors. In 2007, Scott returned to law to practice criminal defense with his brother, Dorian. The years that Scott spent as a criminal defense attorney were the happiest in his professional career. Scott was a kind, compassionate, and detail-oriented advocate for his many clients.

Scott had a wonderful impact on everybody with whom he came into contact. Whether as an educator, lawyer, family member, or community advocate, Scott always saw the positive side of any situation. Many other cancer patients looked to Scott for his compassionate advice and support through his daily blog for those with cancer.

Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jacob & Dorothy Cotlar and Ben & Fannie Wise, and his mother, Marilyn Wise Cotlar. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Janeth Nino Cotlar and their fifteen-year old daughter, Juliana. He is also survived by his father, Dr. Alvin M. Cotlar and his siblings: Cheri Cotlar, Dorian Cotlar, Jennifer Cotlar Balot, and Tiffany Cotlar-Furlow and their respective families.

A service will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Gardens at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, Texas 77024 on Monday, November 9th at noon with burial immediately following. In lieu of customary remembrances, please consider a charitable contribution to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Male Breast Cancer Research Fund, c/o Dr. Sharon Giordano, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486 or a charity of your choice."
