Volunteering is GOOD for Your Health - Join Our Efforts

Should you, or you and your family/friends, want to volunteer over our Winter Break there are many opportunities available by going to www.voly.org. See below for all the reasons why this is such a great and HEALTHY idea both mentally & physically.
My FAVORITE by far for ALL AGES, is to deliver a Meals On Wheels route which are available in all parts of the city. Explore a new neighborhood, talk, teach map skills (ok, how to use the GPS), sing holiday tunes, enjoy about an hour and a half (10-11:30) together with friends or family or both. I often take a route alone and have found the clients to be delightful and full of wonderful stories.
Truly compassion in action.
Interested? Contact Melanie Crommett at crommettm@vnatexas.org and let her know you are from Greenhill. All days (even Christmas) are still available with no deliveries on the weekends or New Year’s Day.
EVERY route delivered makes a difference…and it will make you feel pretty good too!
Benefits of volunteering #1: Volunteering connects you to others
One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help.

Benefits of volunteering #2: Family Volunteering brings everyone together (works well with friends too!)
While it might be a challenge to coordinate everyone’s schedules, volunteering as a family has many worthwhile benefits. Children watch everything you do. By giving back to the community, you show them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others.

Benefits of volunteering #3: “Doing good” is important.
Every day we are bombarded with disheartening news stories. Volunteering presents a proactive way of doing something to make the world a better place. Even the smallest gestures make a difference. And if we all band together, those small gestures can add up to a big change!

Benefits of volunteering #4: Volunteering is good for your mind and body
Volunteering increases self-confidence. Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life.
Volunteering provides a sense of purpose. Whatever your age or life situation, volunteering can help take your mind off your own worries, keep you mentally stimulated, and add more zest to your life.
Volunteering combats depression. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you’re going through challenging times.
Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants.
