Greenhill Homecoming: Undefeated ‘72 Hornets Return

This Friday, October 5, the entire Greenhill campus will celebrate Homecoming. Each year, Homecoming is especially meaningful to the classes returning for their reunions. This Homecoming is particularly special for football players of the Class of 1972 because this year marks the 40th anniversary of their undefeated season.

The former players are returning to campus to commemorate their success and to cheer on this year’s Hornets. They had such a fondness and respect for their coach Tommy Brennan that they decided to fly him in for the reunion. Brennan, an SMU football player in the late 1950s and early 1960s, left Greenhill in the late 60’s but returned to campus to coach football in 1971. Brennan now lives on a cattle ranch in Missouri. Coach Bruce Long will also attend.

Darrell Hurmis ’73 recounted that final game of the season:
"We had to travel to play Dallas Christian, who's team had a 9-0 record. If they beat us, we would be co-champions of the conference. We went on to defeat them, 34-14. Coach Brennan received the Coach of the Year award that year."

The 1972 Hornets will have a pre-game meal with the 2012 Hornets, be introduced before the game, witness the ceremonial coin toss, then join the green and gold-clad crowd to cheer on the home team.

Darrel Hurmis ’73 has been organizing his fellow teammates and coaches, and is thrilled that so many will be able to attend the event.

“Before our final game that season, Coach Brennan said that we would remember that season and the accomplishment for the rest of our lives. We look forward to being back on the field that provided such great memories,” said Hurmis.
